First, watch the video below.
In this video, YouTuber Jensen Tung describes the challenge of creating an apparel brand from scratch.
In this article, while summarizing the contents of the video, I will add my own interpretation as appropriate to explore the possibilities of the clothing business.
Day 1: Ideas
As a certain billionaire once said, “You should start your business not from the product, but from the customer who buys it.”
There are many ideas, but Mr. Tung seems to have decided to use drift culture as a theme.
In the video, footage from the Wild Speed play was also shown, and since it was TOKYO Drift, Mr. Tung was already seen as the drift king of a certain Z33.
Anyway, he seems to have decided on the brand name “DRIFT CLUB”.
There is a market, there are needs, and there are countless pioneers to imitate.
Be clear about what you want to create. I think it’s a great idea.
Day 2: Design & Commercialization
After probably 30 minutes to 2 hours of computer work, he created the following design.
AE86 drifting. Isn’t it great?
From the 2nd day, it will be fashionable with the product launch.
What you need is a printing service.
There seems to be a lot of things, but he seems to have chosen a service called PRINTFUL.
Thanks to the competition in the market, it is unlikely that any service will make a big difference, but by using custom functions such as images, anyone can easily create their own original clothes.
It seems that the brand name can be edited by editing the back side where it says M size or L size. Fine craftsmanship.
Here comes the short story.
It seems that Mr. Tung hesitated to buy a sample, or rather, gave up on the idea of “starting from zero yen”. So he asked the management, “I’ll introduce it in the video, so could you send me a sample?”
Day 3: Try-on
As readers with good intuition will have noticed, the date breaks in the video are based on what you are doing rather than the number of days that have passed in the real world.
Today is the introduction of the sample that arrived. It seems that he got a total of 7 items such as hoodies and T-shirts in multiple materials.
Apparently, Tung decided to start with just three products, following the principle of “don’t blindly increase your options.”
In the near future, I will use PRINTFUL as a reference when I start selling something, so I will take the trouble to write about the materials I used and how I felt about them.
Parker seems to have prepared two types.
The first type seems to be called COTTON HERITAGE M2580.
It has a very nice texture and seems to be of high quality.
The second parka is called HANES P170.
It’s not as thick as the M2580, and the pattern and color match well, giving it a nice feel.
In addition, it seems that two types of T-shirts were ordered.
The first of these is the BELLA + CANVAS 3001.
It seems a little thin, but the texture is good.
The second type of T-shirt is COTTON HERITAGE MC1086.
It seems that this was also a good material, but it seems that one concern is that it is too high in the vertical direction.
Day 4: Website launch
He will appear as a model himself and will use the images he has taken for promotion.
Using a service called wix, I launched a site to promote my brand.
The product lineup consists of a total of 3 types of T-shirts and hoodies.
Simple is best.
It seems that the following video explains how to create a page.
If I feel like it or the need arises, I’ll make a summary article.
Here, I was told the cost of the product and even the profit margin.
For this hoodie, the selling price is $49.99, the cost is $27.90, the difference = profit is $22.09, and the profit margin seems to be 44%.
Similarly, for the T-shirt, the selling price is $29.99, the cost is $20.90, the difference = profit is $9.09, and the profit margin seems to be 30%.
If you purchase more than $ 35, it seems that you have added the option of free shipping only in the United States, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
Days 5 and 6: Create promotional videos to appeal
It seems that he has a policy of introducing products without spending money and without running advertisements.
Taking full advantage of the fact that his appearance resembles Dorikin of Weissi, he exploded with a joke video of adding reactions to the drift video and posted the video on TikTok.
And on the sixth day, he decided to launch a promotional video on his own TikTok.
Unfortunately, it seems that the sales for the day were 0 yen.
Reality doesn’t seem sweet. But it’s no wonder, in another video it took 300 days after opening a shop to get the first review.
It’s a long road ahead, and it will take 1,000 days, not just months or years, to grow your business.
Final day/result announcement
It’s the seventh day of fate, but it seems that sales have increased!
$113 total. It was the same amount of sales as when I worked part-time for a full day.
but this is not profit
In the end, only $35 was left as “profit”.
Despite all that effort, it was only about 4,000 yen.
But I made my first sale in just a week, with just a few items! !
I catch it.
It was a very interesting story. Let’s do some more research.
